On February 1st, myself along with 4 other Alumni met on campus for nearly 3 hours discussing and debating who should receive the 5 scholarships that we were going to be able to award for the 2012-2014 school year. Our goal for this year was to give out 6, but due to a lack of funds we were only in a position to give out 5.
With a total of 14 applicants this year, the decision process was much more difficult than we had anticipated due to this overwhelming response. We spent a lot of time and consideration on each and every applicant to be sure that we gave the funds to the students who were most in need, and were the most deserving.

A few days after I arrived back in Seattle I got a call from Mike Siciliano that we had just received a donation that needed to be applied to the upcoming school year. This allowed us to give the 6th and final award to the a student that we had all wanted to see receive an award.

This process is never easy. It seems that as the years go by, the process becomes harder and harder. Every single student that applied for a scholarship this year was in need. Thankfully I had a great group of people on the panel to help me decide who will be a recipient, and become part of the community of Evelyn Huey Scholarship recipients.

It has been our goal since we started this Scholarship that we would like to give between 6-8 awards a year, at a minimum amount of $2,000. If it wasn’t for the last minute donation, we would have fallen short this year.

My ask is for you to strongly consider investing in a students life. You all have heard this from me at least once a year, and as much as you may not like seeing and hearing someone ask for money, please know that I do not take it lightly asking for your help. But that is just what I am doing. Help me in investing in 6-8 students for the next school year. (2013-2014) now. The goal of having $12,000-$16,000 worth of funds available is a lofty one, but I do feel that we all can do this together before the next Awards Selection Meeting is held in February. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me directly: dyearick@gmail.com.

Sincerely,
Doug Yearick, Class of 1992

Women’s basketball
The women’s basketball team had a new look this season. With only 5 returners and 7 newcomers, they became an exciting team to watch. The first half of the season was difficult, with a schedule comprised of tough tournament games with large North County schools. The girls finished with a 10-0 record in the Pacific division of the Coastal League. Overall they finished 14-12. Megan Franke led the team with 13.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Lindsey Almquist added 3 assists per game. Megan Franke was named Pacific League player of the year and joined Erin Moody on the first team. Makenna White and Lindsey Almquist were named to the 2nd team, with Bekah Askew, Jessi Moore and Maile Burtech honorable mention.

Men’s basketball
The 2011-2012 SFC Men’s Basketball team completed a great season competing against some of the top programs in the county, beating teams like Westview (top 10), LJCD (D4 champs) and losing to Army-Navy and Parker by two and three respectively. The team ended the season losing in the Final Four against Parker. Leading by nine points at half and playing probably its best half of the season, the Eagles couldn’t close them out in the second half. Playing against such tough competition night in and night out really made the team stronger. The Men’s team played its best basketball of the year towards the end and a few plays here to there could have put the team in the Championship. The Eagles lose two seniors, Mason Tucker and Michael Stephenson, but return a majority of its impact players next season.

Women’s water polo
The women’s water polo team did a fine job this season with young talent. Mixed with the senior leadership and tenacious defense of captains Lauren Fowler and Christina Lindsey the team has impressive goals against average per game and continue to improve offensively. They surpassed their goal of total wins for the year and show strong potential for the future.

Men’s Soccer
This year’s men’s soccer team was young, only graduating 2 seniors. They finished 7-6-3 overall, and were 3-3-2 in the tough Coastal League. Their team verse was Colossians 3:17, and were challenged to play the game to the glory of God. This season, Juniors Nathan Ching and Alec Aschieris were named to the 1st ‘All Coastal League Team and Freshman Ian Aschieris was named to the 2nd All Coastal League Team The season ended with the team qualifying for the CIF playoffs, where they were defeated by a very talented King Chavez team.

Women’s Soccer
The women’s soccer team returned 8 starters from last year’s D-5 Semifinal team, and was led by captains Julia Mirich, Kayla McGuinness and Brooke Wimsatt. With a team motto of ‘Thrive’ and team verses of 2 Peter 1:3-8, the team sought to bring their best to every game, practice, and drill. This year Kayla McGuinness was honored by the Coastal League as a member of the All League First Team.

Mike Siciliano, Class of 2001 – Italy When I returned to SFC as an employee,...

Mike Siciliano, Class of 2001 – Italy

When I returned to SFC as an employee, I was stunned to learn that our small school in Solana Beach now sends hundreds of students on mission trips all over the world. Teams of 10 – 25 students travel to places like Russia, Thailand, India, France, Uganda, and a host of other nations to serve the Lord through work projects, relationship building, teaching, and more. These trips provide students with a much broader view of the world, a deeper understanding of the challenges its people face, and a vision for how they can use their gifts to make an impact on the lives of others. Of course, they also create some of the most fun and memorable experiences students have during their time at SFC.

In February, I was fortunate to chaperone a group of 14 students on a trip to Rome and Florence. Although you may not think of Italy as a “traditional” mission field given its history with the church, we found that for many Italians, faith was mostly a cultural tradition rather than a guiding influence on everyday life. Our students partnered with several “Young Life” groups in Italy, putting on programs at schools during the day and in the evening that included games, discussions about cultural differences, and ultimately creating a forum for students to share the value of a personal relationship with God with their Italian peers. The students also got their fill of history, visiting sites like the Colosseum, the Vatican, and the Duomo of Florence. Thanks to today’s technology, the relationships formed on the trip didn’t end with the journey back home, as the students still communicate regularly with their Italian friends though Facebook and
over email.

Lauren Bullock, Class of 1997 – India

I had the privilege of joining a team of juniors and seniors from SFC on a mission trip to Delhi, India in February where I documented their week at Grace Home, a Christian orphanage with 115 boys and girls from ages 3-20. The team of 10 students spent a majority of their time teaching in the school at the orphanage and playing with the kids, but also ran a VBS that reached out to the local kids in the poor neighborhood that surrounds the orphanage.

It was inspiring to be a part of a life-changing trip for these students and see them whole-heartedly, with strength and understanding that wasn’t their own, pour themselves into the orphans and their time in India. To witness God work in them and through them, shaping not only their hearts and minds, but those of the orphans at Grace Home as well was impactful for me. I love that SFC provides students with mission trips that I believe will significantly shape their future.

SFCAA: What’s been going on in your life since you graduated SFC? Bryan Ziegler: I...

SFCAA: What’s been going on in your life since you graduated SFC?
Bryan Ziegler: I attended Biola University with fellow SFC alumni Michelle Ziegler and we got hitched after our first year of college. I was heavily involved with speech and debate at Biola and even coached debate during my final year. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA in Communications with a minor in Business Administration and Biblical Studies. I then attended the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Academy and became a Reserve Deputy. I later attended USD Law School and have been a Deputy District Attorney, Deputy City Attorney and now a Senior Deputy County Counsel.
More importantly, my wife and I have been busy having lots of babies. Our oldest is Jacob (6 yrs), Samuel (almost 4 yrs), Elijah (2 yrs) and Silas (2 months). We go to North Coast Calvary Chapel and have been involved in leading the Young Marrieds and pre-marital mentoring. God has blessed our marriage and family and we want to do the same for others.

SFCAA: What are some of your greatest SFC memories?
BZ: My greatest SFC memories are playing sports like football, soccer and baseball and having great coaches who displayed leadership such as Gilbert, Salyer, Brown, Denson, Reinke and Bear. Just having that type of intimate Christian TEAM, together everyone achieves miracles. Nothing in life afterwards comes close to that.

SFCAA: You decided to run for District 3 County Board of Supervisors. What brought you to this decision?
BZ: I have always been interested in politics and being a Christian leader as in Romans 13. I believe God has a plan for our country and locally for the County of San Diego. I want to be a part of that plan and am committed to servant leadership through serving the people of the county of San Diego as a humble Christian man.

SFCAA: What changes do you want to bring about in your district?
BZ: I want to reduce Government spending, cut through the red tape to make it easier for small businesses to thrive in our County. I want to establish a committee that systematically goes through all of our local rules and regulations and pares them down to just the bare minimum so that we maximize the liberties of the individual citizens and our religious freedoms.
Check out my website: http://www.zig4d3.com and vote for me on June 5th!

SFCAA: Who is your target voter?
BZ: I am a Christian and a Tea Party Republican so that would be my target voter. There are about 60 million Christians in America, only half are registered to vote and less than half of those registered actually vote. Christians in America need to stand up and vote so that we can restore America to its foundation and its greatness. The more we stay silent and lukewarm the more our freedoms are taken away from us.

SFCAA: What subject are you most passionate about in this running?
BZ: I am most passionate about honoring the legacy of my Grandfather, Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin, who was the governor of Maryland and considered for Eisenhower’s running mate. My mom always saw the same passions is me as her father and I want to live up to that legacy. I am passionate about being a servant leader and standing up for the freedoms and liberties of the citizens of San Diego County.

SFCAA: Do you have political aspirations for the future?
BZ: Yes I do, but I want to do it to serve not to become a career politician intent on bringing about my own kingdom. It’s all in God’s hands and I trust in him 100% whatever happens.

SFCAA: How did your time at SFC prepare you for this step in your life?
BZ: At SFC I was surrounded by great coaches, teachers and leaders who made me the Christian leader I am today. I was also the ASB president which helped prepare me for everything I am doing now to further the Kingdom of God. When I attended SFC the focus was on Christ and spiritual leadership. Without that intimacy and closeness with our Lord, I/we are nothing.
I will leave you with one of my favorite verses from Mathew 11:12: “From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it.”

If you’re reading this it is because you are an interested alumni of SFC. Thank you for your interest in the school and the people that are the SFC past and present. I have been amazed at how many children of alumni are now sitting in the same seats that we once did years ago – some more than others! Additionally, we have seen the power that our alumni group has by giving financially to the Evelyn Huey Scholarship Fund (EHSF) that has given out numerous $2000 scholarships to SFC seniors to help them finish out their high school career at Santa Fe Christian.

I have had the pleasure of serving alongside a group of alumni who have donated time, energy, and money to serve the school and the alumni through events and outreach. Annie (Menconi) Montgomery and Lauren Bullock have spearheaded the Homecoming events which required numerous hours to plan and execute so that our alumni body would have at least one opportunity each year to engage with each other, catch up, and share our SFC stories. Doug Yearick has coordinated the growth and development of the EHSF so that we, the alumni, can directly impact the lives of SFC students who are one year away from joining our ranks. Carrie (Hague) Sinclair has donated countless hours to developing our alumni website (www.sfcsalumni.com) and the newsletter which you’re now reading. Without her expertise and energy we would not be able to communicate to the alumni body as effectively as we are able to now. Mike Siciliano and Mike Farrington have been critical in the strategic development of the alumni association, particularly in helping us integrate with the student body, faculty, and staff at the school. Colton Sudberry and Drake Kellas represented the alumni as liaisons to the board of directors and were both elected to the board after serving in this capacity.

These examples are just a few ways in which a small group of SFC alumni have had a sizeable impact on our school as well as the alumni body. We are excited about what has been accomplished over the past four years, and we are as equally excited about what the future holds for the school and the association. And, we need your help. We need alumni who are willing to serve in a leadership role in the association. The school and the alumni need people with fresh ideas and a passion to see the alumni have an even greater role and impact on campus and in the alumni community. If this is you, even if you’re just slightly interested, email us at alumni@sfcs.net. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and I hope that you seriously consider how you can get involved with the SFC alumni association.

Sincerely,
Keith Galloway, Class of 1991

SFC honored its first CIF Football Championship team on November 5th, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the “Men of Destiny” at halftime of the football game. Nearly every player and coach from the team was in attendance, several flying in from out of state. The 1991 Eagles went 12-1 and defeated La Jolla Country Day in the CIF Championship game 56-36. Dubbed the “Men of Destiny” by their coaches as Freshman in 1988, the team worked for four years towards their goal of winning SFC’s first ever football championship. Even 20 years later, the players and coaches share a strong bond they say will never be broken.

Santa Fe Christian Lower School was named a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School, a distinction by the U.S. Department of Education that ranks it among the highest performing schools nationwide. SFC was one of only 49 private schools in the nation awarded this year and the only private school named west of the Mississippi! The U.S. Department of Education honored the 255 public and 49 private schools with their National Blue Ribbon School awards at a conference and awards ceremony November 14–15 in Washington, D.C.

The Blue Ribbon Selection Process
The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private schools in several categories. SFC Lower School was awarded under the “High Performing Schools” category. These schools are ranked among each state’s highest performing schools as measured by their performance on state assessments or, in the case of private schools, test scores at the highest performance level on nationally normed tests.
Before selecting National Blue Ribbon Schools, the Department asks for nominations from the top education official in every state, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and the Bureau of Indian Education. The Council for American Private Education (CAPE) nominated SFC along with other private schools. A total of 413 schools nationwide were nominated, based on the number of K–12 students and the number of schools in each jurisdiction. The schools are then invited by the Secretary of Education to submit an application for possible recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School. After Principal Hannah Park and her team completed an extensive application process in May, our school was selected as a winner.

It’s not easy pulling together a reunion, but the Class of 2001 had over half of their class return Homecoming Weekend for their 10 year reunion. Alumni from across the country, from New York to Seattle and New Jersey to San Francisco, came back to connect and see each other again.

Following the SFC Homecoming Football game, Senior Class President Alex Masterson and Lindsay Helling organized an incredible night with over 60 people at Chevy’s in Del Mar. Old friends spent time catching each other up on the past 10 years, sharing stories of weddings, new careers, kids, and talking to their favorite teachers including Paul and Glenda Lyons, Barbara Farrington, Sheri Buell, Mike Jelnick, and Steve Strimple.
“The best part of the night was swapping stories with people that I hadn’t seen since high school!” said Class of ’01 alum Jon Ulrich.

Here’s to another 10 years Class of 2001!

The Class of 2006 was reunited for a small “Five Year Get Together” at Pizza Port in Solana Beach just before the Homecoming football game on October 29th, 2011. Much of the class is currently spread out across the United States participating in various educational and vocational pursuits, but for those that were in the area, the gathering was a great time for old friends to catch up on recent events. Notably, Jeremiah Young shared about his non-profit group, Bloom Projects International, that focuses on promoting self sustained social development in developing countries; Rachael Hershman (Lunghi) shared memories of her recent wedding; and Jenna Little explained the impetus for her new football blog, www.girongirls.com. The gang then headed over to SFC to watch the Homecoming football game and see assistant coaches Josh Bretow and Trevor Love in action.
